What vaccinations do you need for Hajj and Umrah?
Every pilgrim travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah must show proof of a valid meningitis ACWY (MenACWY) vaccination — a quadrivalent vaccine protecting against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y. This is a mandatory entry requirement set by the Saudi Ministry of Health, and the certificate is usually needed for your visa as well as on arrival. Because large numbers of pilgrims gather from around the world, the risk of meningococcal disease spreading is higher, which is why this requirement exists. At Belgrave PharmHealth in Highfield we provide the MenACWY vaccine and the official certificate, alongside any other vaccines recommended for your trip — all in a single, convenient appointment. As a clinic at the heart of Sheffield’s Muslim communities in Sharrow, Nether Edge, Darnall and Burngreave, we understand the timing and significance of pilgrimage, and we make getting ready straightforward and respectful.
The required MenACWY certificate
The MenACWY certificate must usually be issued at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia and remains valid for several years. We issue the certificate at your appointment, so you leave with the documentation you need for your visa and entry. If you’ve had MenACWY before, bring any record you have and we’ll advise whether you’re still covered.
Other recommended vaccines for pilgrims
Beyond the mandatory MenACWY, your pharmacist may recommend:
- Seasonal influenza — advised for pilgrims, especially older travellers and those with health conditions, given the close crowds.
- Polio — required for travellers arriving from, or who have recently visited, certain countries; we’ll check your situation.
- Routine boosters — making sure you’re up to date with tetanus, diphtheria and MMR.
- Hepatitis A — worth considering depending on your wider travel and dietary plans.
We’ll tailor recommendations to you, drawing on NATHNAC and NHS travel-health guidance.
When to book
Attend at least two to three weeks before you travel. This allows time for the MenACWY certificate (needed 10+ days before arrival) and for any other vaccines to take effect. Demand rises sharply before Hajj and during popular Umrah periods including Ramadan, so booking early during these seasons is wise.
